The DJI Go 4 app is important if you want to learn to fly well. The app is your command control center giving you all the essential information like the number of satellites, drone status, flight time, shots or recording time left, and so on. Dji has updated the app for the DJI Mavic, Phantom 4 series, dji spark, and I’m guessing going forward. I’m aware of the 3rd party app litchi for pre-flight planning automation, but to be honest I haven’t been able to connect my DJI mavic to litchi successfully yet. I also flew the Phantom 1 drone during what seems like the dark ages in 2013 with no app.
I highly recommend you get familiar with the app to get the most out of your DJI Mavic drone. If you are a Phantom 3 pilot that has used the original DJI Go app then this app is very familiar. I think the main difference are the additions of new intelligent modes like terrain, cinematic, tripod, and gesture modes. In this video I go into a 30-minute tour of the Dji go 4 app covering just the essentials. I also managed to update my drone in June 2017 and noticed they have added a “fixed wing flight mode”. The fixed wing flight mode is designed to respond like a regular small plane that is floating. Once you have forward momentum the drone will glide. I want to spend more time experimenting with it, but I recommend you give yourself a large open area for this mode. I recommend following my video and having your Mavic turned on connected to the remote so you can follow along.
As a bonus I’ve included the flight simulator and flight records in the DJI Go 4 app.
